Buy now, pay later flights let you book before payday and pay in installments: 4 interest-free payments over about 6 weeks, or a monthly loan at up to 36% APR. American and Southwest offer plans at their own checkout, and Klarna and Afterpay work wherever their badge appears. Here is who offers what, what a $600 fare costs on each plan, and what happens to the loan if the flight is cancelled.

How buy now, pay later flights work

You choose a pay-later option at checkout, the lender decides within minutes, and the airline issues your ticket as normal. From then on you repay the lender, not the airline: either 4 payments over about 6 weeks (Pay in 4), or fixed monthly payments priced from your credit at up to 36% APR, sometimes after a down payment.

You can fly before the loan is paid off. Flex Pay by Upgrade, the plan Southwest uses, asks you to allow a few days between booking and departure for the loan to process, so it suits trips booked ahead rather than tomorrow’s flight.

Do pay-later flights need a credit check?

Usually. Klarna runs a soft credit check for Pay in 4, which it says does not affect your credit score. Affirm and Flex Pay set your rate from your credit, and Flex Pay asks for your Social Security number if you live in the US. The one plan that says it needs no application or credit check is American’s Citi Flex Pay, which splits a flight on a Citi / AAdvantage card you already hold.

Which airlines offer buy now, pay later?

American and Southwest sell pay-later plans at their own checkout, and Delta offers one on vacation packages. Flex Pay, the brand formerly called Uplift, also lists United Airlines and Air Canada among its partners, so look for it at their checkouts too.

Airline pay-later plans, as of October 2026
Airline Plan Terms Limits
American Affirm at checkout Payments over time at up to 36% APR, based on credit Flights and seats only, not bags or other extras
American Citi Flex Pay Fixed monthly payments, no application or credit check Eligible Citi / AAdvantage cardmembers, flights of $75 or more
Southwest Flex Pay by Upgrade 0% to 36% APR, no late fees or prepayment penalties $150 minimum; down payment may be required; not for residents of Iowa, West Virginia or D.C.
Delta Affirm through Delta Vacations 6, 12, 18 or 24 monthly payments at 10% to 36% APR, no late or hidden fees Vacation packages booked with Delta Vacations

Booking flights with Klarna, Afterpay or Affirm

Affirm, Klarna and Afterpay work at airline and travel-site checkouts that show their badge. Klarna also works where its badge is missing: pay with a one-time card created in the Klarna app, or with Klarna on Apple Pay.

Pay-later lenders for flights, as of October 2026
Lender Pay in 4 Monthly plans Credit check Where it works for flights
Affirm 0% APR, 4 payments every 2 weeks 0% to 36% APR; down payment may be required Eligibility check; rate set by your credit aa.com flights and seats; Delta Vacations packages
Klarna Interest-free, 4 payments every 2 weeks 0.00% to 35.99% APR over 3 to 24 months Soft check for Pay in 4, no effect on your score Badge at checkout; one-time card or Apple Pay elsewhere
Afterpay Interest-free, 4 payments over 6 weeks A finance fee may apply to some loans 18 or older, US resident, eligibility criteria Partner brands that show Afterpay at checkout
Flex Pay by Upgrade (formerly Uplift) No pay-in-4 plan listed 0% to 36% APR; no late or prepayment fees Credit information, plus your Social Security number southwest.com; partners include United and Air Canada

Late fees differ. Klarna charges up to $7 per missed Pay in 4 payment, never more than 25% of the order in total, and Afterpay says late fees may apply. Flex Pay and Delta Vacations’ Affirm plans charge none.

What pay later costs on a $600 fare

The fare is the same on every plan; the APR decides what you pay on top. Affirm’s own example shows the math: $80 down on a $400 purchase, then 12 monthly payments of $28.88 at 15% APR. Any interest is charged on the amount you finance, so finding a cheaper fare cuts the cost twice: less to repay, and less interest on it.

Worked exampleOne $600 spring-break fare on 5 plans

Example fares, October 2026 search: 2 travelers, Chicago O’Hare to Orlando round trip on American, 13 to 20 March 2027, $300 each and $600 in total. You pick Affirm at checkout, and it shows its offers after the eligibility check; the rows are offers it could make, and the figures assume no down payment.

Plan Payments Total paid Added to the fare
Pay now by debit card $600 today $600 $0
Pay in 4 at 0% APR 4 x $150, every 2 weeks $600 $0
12 months at 0% APR 12 x $50 $600 $0
12 months at 15% APR 12 x $54.15 About $650 About $50
12 months at 36% APR 12 x $60.28 About $723 About $123

Result: the same 2 seats cost $600 to about $723, depending on the rate Affirm offers. You see your real APR only after the check, and you can still close the offer and pay by card.

What happens if you cancel or the airline cancels

A pay-later ticket is an ordinary ticket, so the airline’s fare rules decide what you get back. Southwest’s Flex Pay page says changes and cancellations follow the merchant’s terms. Any refund the airline owes goes back to the original form of payment, which for a financed ticket is the plan, not your bank account.

How the lender then applies that refund to payments and interest already paid is set by its loan terms.

A financed ticket keeps the 24-hour cancellation window: book at least 7 days before departure, and US rules require the airline to hold the reservation at the quoted fare without payment or let you cancel it without penalty for 24 hours.

Cancelling a nonrefundable ticket yourself after the first 24 hours sends nothing back to the plan: you usually get a travel credit or nothing. If your plans could change, a refundable fare is the ticket that returns money when you cancel by choice, at a higher price up front.

How to book a flight and pay later

From fare search to final payment

  1. Check the total against the plan’s minimum: Flex Pay on Southwest needs at least $150, and Citi Flex Pay on American at least $75.
  2. Book with the airline at least 7 days before departure to keep the 24-hour cancellation window.
  3. Choose the plan at checkout, or pay with a one-time Klarna card or Klarna on Apple Pay if the airline shows no Klarna badge.
  4. Read the offer before you accept: the APR, the number of payments, any down payment and the total you will repay.
  5. Turn on autopay so a missed payment does not add a late fee.
  6. Keep the airline’s booking and the lender’s payment plan together in case the flight changes.

Is buy now, pay later worth it for flights?

It is worth it when the plan adds nothing to the fare and you would buy that fare today anyway. If you are still deciding, an airline hold is the better tool: it keeps the price for a short time with no loan, and some airlines do it free for 24 hours.

Good fit:

  • Pay in 4 on a fare you can clear in 6 weeks. The 4 payments add nothing to the price.
  • A 0% monthly offer. 12 payments of $50 on a $600 fare cost the same as paying today.
  • A fare you want to lock before payday. Booking now keeps today’s price, and the cost lands across your next few paychecks.
  • A trip booked ahead. Flex Pay needs a few days before departure to process the loan.

Wrong tool:

  • A rate near 36%. It adds about $123 to a $600 fare over 12 months.
  • A trip that may not happen. A cancelled nonrefundable ticket leaves every payment in place.

Frequently asked questions

Do any airlines let you use Klarna?

Yes, at airline and travel-site checkouts that show the Klarna badge. Where Klarna is not offered, you can pay with a one-time card from the Klarna app or with Klarna on Apple Pay.

Can you use Afterpay for flights?

Yes, where an airline or travel site lists Afterpay at checkout. It splits the price into 4 interest-free payments over 6 weeks, and late fees may apply if you miss one.

Does buy now, pay later affect your credit?

Klarna's Pay in 4 runs a soft check that Klarna says does not affect your credit score, while monthly loans from Affirm, Klarna and Flex Pay are priced from your credit. How a loan is reported afterward depends on the lender's terms.

What happens to a pay-later plan if my flight is cancelled?

The refund goes to the plan, not to you: if the airline cancels or significantly changes the flight and you decline the alternative, US rules require a full refund to the original form of payment. The lender's terms decide how it is applied to payments and interest already paid. If you cancel a nonrefundable ticket yourself after 24 hours, you usually get a travel credit and the payments continue.

Is Klarna better than Afterpay for flights?

We would start with Klarna, because its one-time card and Apple Pay option work at airlines that do not show Klarna at checkout. Both offer 4 interest-free payments over about 6 weeks, and Klarna adds monthly financing at 0.00% to 35.99% APR.
