Cheap last-minute flights exist, but they are the exception. On average, US fares start climbing about 3 weeks before departure and jump in the final week. When you have to fly soon, the savings come from changing the trip, not from waiting for the price. Here is what each week of waiting costs, the searches that still find lower fares, how bereavement fares work, and how to protect a ticket bought inside 7 days.

Do flights get cheaper at the last minute?

Usually not. CheapAir’s 2024 study of more than 917 million fares across more than 8,000 US markets found the lowest average prices 21 to 74 days before departure, with the single best day about 42 days out. Closer in, airlines raise prices more aggressively, and the study puts the start of those increases at around 21 days from travel.

ARC’s 2025 Air Hacks report, built with Expedia, points the same way: booking a domestic trip at least 34 days out could save up to 25% compared with a last-minute purchase. Here is what each week of waiting adds on CheapAir’s averages.

What each week of waiting costs
Days before departure Average fare vs the 21-74 day window A $300 fare at that point Free 24-hour hold or cancellation
21-74 days Lowest $300 Yes
14-20 days About 8% more About $324 Yes
7-13 days About 26% more About $378 Yes
0-6 days About 59% more About $477 No

How many days out counts as last minute?

If your trip is more than 3 weeks away, you are not booking last-minute yet, and the normal booking window still applies: Google’s 2026 analysis of 5 years of Google Flights data puts the lowest domestic fares about 39 days before departure, inside a low range of 22 to 57 days. Summer runs later. July and August trips hit their lowest average 21 days out, within a range of 20 to 47 days, so a summer trip booked 3 weeks ahead is on time.

Do last-minute flight deals still happen?

Sometimes. Fares change constantly, 49 times on average over a fare’s life and by about $98 each time in CheapAir’s data, so a price can dip in the final week. On average it does not, which makes a late drop luck rather than a plan. Error fares are luck of the same kind: a fare published by mistake follows no booking calendar, and it rewards a route you already watch, not a trip you need on Thursday.

How to find cheap last-minute flights

The usual ways to cut a fare still work inside 3 weeks, but in a different order. With the fare already high, changing the dates, airports and routing saves more than waiting for the price to fall.

Move the dates by a day or two

Before you settle on a day, open the Dates view in Google Flights, which shows which travel dates have the best fares. In Google’s 2026 data, leaving on a Monday and returning on a Tuesday or Wednesday cost about 14% less than weekend trips. If the trip is built around a fixed event, keep the outbound and move the return.

Check nearby airports

Search every airport you can reach, not only the closest. Google Flights’ Airports section can note when fares are cheaper at a different airport, and its Cheapest tab adds itineraries that leave from one airport in a city and return to another. Count the drive, train or parking before you call it a saving.

The Cheapest tab can also include itineraries where you collect and recheck your own bags between flights, which is a real risk on a tight connection.

Take a connection or fly at odd hours

Nonstops cost about 20% more on average than trips with a connection in Google’s 2026 data, so switch on 1-stop results even on a route you would normally fly direct. Widen the departure-time filter as well, so early-morning flights and overnight red-eye flights appear in the results. At short notice you want every flight on the route priced, not just the convenient ones.

Price the trip in miles

If you hold airline miles, run the same search as an award on the airline’s own site, then compare the miles plus taxes and fees with the cash fare before you pay.

Price two one-ways against the round trip

For a trip with a set return, price the round trip against separate one-way tickets for the same dates, with bags added. Two one-ways can win when a different airline is cheapest each way, and they suit a trip with an open return: book the outbound now and the return when you know the date, at whatever it costs then.

Read advertised one-way prices with care. Under US fare advertising rules, a price available only with a round-trip purchase must be shown as “each way”, never as “one-way”. An “each way” price in a sale banner can be half of a round trip, not a ticket you can buy on its own, and the round-trip requirement must appear next to the price.

Worked examplePricing a same-week trip 4 ways

Example fares, illustrative only, for one adult in economy, searched Thu 22 Oct 2026.

The trip: Boston to Austin for a family event on Saturday 31 October, leaving Wednesday 28 October, 6 days out.

Search Out Back Round-trip total
Nonstop from Boston Wed 28 Oct Sun 1 Nov $662
1 stop from Boston Wed 28 Oct Sun 1 Nov $552
1 stop, back on Monday Wed 28 Oct Mon 2 Nov $489
2 one-ways on different airlines, from Providence Wed 28 Oct Mon 2 Nov $431

Taking a connection cut $110, in line with the 20% gap between nonstops and connections in Google’s data. Flying back on Monday saved another $63. Providence saved $58 more, but on 2 separate tickets with a drive each way, so the traveler books the $489 trip with the airline. At 6 days out there is no free 24-hour cancellation, so they pick a fare type that allows changes over the cheapest basic fare.

Bereavement fares: what Delta offers

A bereavement fare is a fare for travel after a close relative dies or is dying. Not every airline sells one, and those that do set their own rules. As of October 2026, Delta’s bereavement fare policy offers SkyMiles members a discounted fare with ticketing penalties waived, on these terms.

Delta bereavement fare vs a regular Delta fare
What applies Bereavement fare Regular fare
Who can buy it SkyMiles members travelling for the death or imminent death of an immediate family member Anyone
How to book Message Us or 800-221-1212; not sold on delta.com On delta.com or through Delta Reservations
Price Discounted, with no amount stated That day’s fare, which may be lower
Deadline Travel must start within 7 days of the death or imminent death; ticketed immediately None
Changes Ticketing penalties waived; fare difference may apply No change fee on travel from the US, except Basic; fare difference applies
Refunds Only on unrestricted bereavement tickets Depends on the fare
Paperwork Documentation is subject to verification None

Immediate family at Delta means a spouse or domestic partner, parents, children, siblings, grandparents, grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, with step and in-law relations counted for parents, children and siblings. The fares apply only on Delta and Delta Connection flights, and standard bag fees apply.

Delta itself says lower promotional fares may be available, so get the bereavement quote, compare it with the cheapest public fare for the same flights, and book the lower one unless the waived ticketing penalties matter, as they do when a funeral date is not set yet. A student fare needs the same check: price it next to the cheapest public fare and book whichever is lower.

A booking checklist for trips inside a week

When the trip is days away, this order wastes the least time.

Book a same-week trip in this order

  1. Ask Delta, or the airline you plan to fly, about a bereavement fare first if the trip is for a death in your immediate family, and note the quote.
  2. Search the route in Google Flights for your dates, then open the Dates view and the Airports section.
  3. Switch on 1-stop flights and widen the departure times to include early and overnight flights.
  4. Price the same flights in miles if you hold any, and compare miles plus fees with the cash fare.
  5. Price two one-ways on different airlines against the best round trip, with bags added.
  6. Choose a fare type you can change, unless the trip has no chance of moving, and book.

How to protect a ticket bought inside 7 days

The federal free 24-hour hold or cancellation stops one week before departure.

One protection does not depend on when you booked. If the airline cancels your flight or changes it significantly, and you turn down the new flight, a rebooking and any voucher, the airline that sold the ticket owes you a full refund, including taxes and fees such as bags. A significant change includes a departure moved 3 hours or more earlier or an arrival moved 3 hours or more later on a domestic trip, or 6 hours or more on an international one. The refund is due within 7 business days on a credit card and 20 calendar days for other payment types, debit cards included.

Frequently asked questions

Do flights get cheaper at the last minute?

Usually not. In CheapAir's 2024 study of US domestic fares, tickets bought in the final 6 days averaged about 59% more than tickets bought 21 to 74 days out. A late drop can happen, but it is the exception.

How do I find cheap last-minute flights?

Change the trip rather than wait for the price. Search a day or two either side, include nearby airports and 1-stop flights, and price two one-ways on different airlines against the round trip. If you hold airline miles, price the same flights as an award before you pay cash.

Where is the best place to search for last-minute flights?

Start with a search engine that compares many sellers at once, such as Google Flights, which compares offers from over 300 travel partners. Then check the airline's own site for the flights you picked before you pay.

How do I find cheap last-minute one-way flights?

Search each direction on its own, because the cheapest airline can differ by direction. Treat an advertised 'each way' price with care: under US rules, a fare you can only buy as part of a round trip must be advertised as 'each way', never as 'one-way'.

Is it cheaper to book two one-ways last minute?

Sometimes. It depends on the route and on whether a different airline is cheapest in each direction, so price the round trip and both one-ways for the same dates with bags added. Each one-way ticket carries its own change rules and bag fees.

Do airlines still offer bereavement fares?

Some do. Delta sells them to SkyMiles members travelling for the death or imminent death of an immediate family member, booked through Message Us or by phone, with travel starting within 7 days of the death or imminent death. Delta states no discount amount and says lower promotional fares may be available, so compare before you book.

Does the 24-hour cancellation rule apply to last-minute flights?

Not inside a week. US rules require airlines to offer a free 24-hour hold or a free cancellation only on reservations made one week or more before departure. For a trip inside that window, choose a fare type you can change.

Do flight prices drop at 3am?

We found no airline, regulator or fare study showing that they do. Fares change 49 times on average over their life in CheapAir's data, so a lower price late at night is ordinary movement, not a schedule. At short notice, book a fare you can live with rather than wait for a time of day.
